In this week’s StockPointer content analysis (see attachment), we review the Top 20 companies from the S&P 500 consumer discretionary sector based on SP Score. Consumer discretionary represents the 2nd biggest sector weight in our US Top 100 model portfolio also known as SPiX US Top 100 – Large Cap.  Download

Currently, the top 5 SP Scores for the S&P 500 consumer discretionary stocks are:

–          Directv (DTV) – 76%

–          Autozone (AZO) – 76%

–          Ross Stores (ROST) – 73%

–          Petsmart (PETM) – 72%

–          Coach (COH) – 72%

The SP Scores of the Top 20 have not been very volatile over the last 90 days. Some have remained stable while the biggest variation was 10% on Cablevision Sys. Most of the Top 20 trade close to their intrinsic value. Only Coach (COH) and Discovery Communications (DISCA) trade at a discount of more than 30%. The latter is also the only company in the Top 20 to trade at a negative FGV/EV highlighting negative growth expectations. Since we are looking at the Top stocks in the S&P 500 consumer discretionary sector, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the average economic performance index (EPI) for a company of this group is 2.4.
