Portfolio Manager’s August Comment for July Results

In July, the S&P/TSX, S&P 500 and MCSI ACWI ex USA increased by 5.9%, 1.2% and 2.3% respectively.

At the end of the 12-month period ending July 31, the S&P/TSX increased by 15.7%, the S&P 500 performed best and grew by 22.1% while the MSCI ACWI ex USA increased by 10.3%.

The NQICAT monthly performance saw an increase of 5.2% while it grew by 24.3% on an annual basis.

The best TSX sectors for the month of May were Materials up 9.2%, Utilities up 7.8%, and Consumer Staples up by 7.7%.

The worst performing sectors were Energy, up 2.4%, Industrials, up 2.7%, and Information Technology, up 4.5%.

The best monthly performers in NQICAT were Dollarama Inc. up 14.4%, Alimentation Couche-Tard. up 11.2%, and Constellation Software Inc up 10.5%.

At the opposite, the weakest contributors were Tourmaline Oil Corp down 2.1%, Canadian National Railway Co. down 1.1%, and Richelieu Hardware down 1%.

July Transactions

There were two transactions in our Stockpointer Canada model portfolio.

We sold IA Financial Corporation (IAG) mainly due to its lower SP score compared to the other financials stocks in the sector. We added First National Financial Corp ranking top in termso f SP score among other financial stocks.

Additionally, we sold Hydro One Ltd (H) mainly due to its SP score being under 60. To replace, Hydro One, we bought EMERA Inc (EMA) which has a higher SP score.
