Portfolio Manager’s August Comment for July Results

In July, the S&P/TSX grew by 1.7%, the S&P 500 saw a slightly higher growth of 2.2% while the MSCI ACWI ex USA rose declined by 0.3%.

At the end of the 12-month period ending July 31, the S&P/TSX was the highest gainer and increased by 21.4%, the S&P 500 followed showcasing growth of about 16.3% while the MSCI ACWI ex USA increased by 15.4%.

In July, NQICAT saw a slight uptick of 0.4% while it increased by 3.5% on an annual basis.

The best TSX sectors for the month of July were Telecom up 5%, Information Technology up 4.5% and Consumer Discretionary up 3.9%.

The worst performing sectors were Heath Care down 6.6%, Consumer Discretionary down 0.5% and Materials remained unchanged.

The best monthly performers in NQICAT were First National Financial Corp up 17.8%, goeasy up 9.9% and Imperial Oil up 7.5%. At the opposite, the weakest contributors were Tourmaline Oil Corp down 10.2%, Intact Financial Corporation down 9.6% and Canadian National Railways Co down 8.8%.
